Flooding problems?? What do you do? Sump pumps and submersible sump pumps are your answer. Submersible sump pumps:The submersible sump pump will go directly into the water. It can operate under water. Many submersible sump pumps will only last 4 to 12 years because of the conditions they work under. Depending on the size of the motor in the pump you can pump as much water as you need. Most pumps run from 1/6 to ˝ horse power. This will help determine the efficiency of the pump. The GPH factor. GPH is gallons per hour. Or, how many gallons per hour will a sump pump remove at 1-foot head. The head is the vertical distance the sump pump will have to force the water up. Most pumps use 1-foot head as the factor for figuring GPH. A 2000 GPH could drop to 1600 GPH by adding 5 feet to the vertical push. The material in your submersible sump pump will determine its longevity and effectiveness. Remember you get what you pay for. Look for a pump that is in stainless steel or bronze. These metals won’t corrode as fast. Epoxy-coated cast iron or water resistant alloys are expectable material for the sump pump. There is also the power supply that runs your pump. Most sump pumps will use a standard 110/220 three prong plug. When working with water it is a good idea to use a GFI outlet. Some larger pumps will use a three phase plug. Try to buy a pump with a long power cord. Extension plugs are not advisable with a submersible sump pump. Pedestal pumps; The pedestal sump pump is another option. Here the pump sits in an area that is not fully submersed in water. The key to your deciding which sump pump to use should be made by thinking of what automatic switch will I use on the pump. An automatic switch will turn the pump on when the water starts to build and off when the pumping is done. Without a switch you will run the chance of not being around when the water starts to pool and get flooded. The other problem is pumps need water to work. A pump will burn out if run “dry”. There are many types of switches for submersible sump pumps, Ball float, Mercury some new models have electronic sensors that turn the pump on and off. Either way with out the switch you run the risk of flooding or burning out your sump pump. The central New Jersey area has primarily two types of ground sandy and clay. Each one brings its own challenges for picking the right sump pump. A NJ sump pump should be able to pass small particles through the pump. Leaves and twigs can be a problem clogging up a pump. Make sure if you are in an out door setting to use a sump pump that can handle small particles. When looking for a NJ pump you can contact AM-INd.in Rahway NJ. They have a full line of pumps.
